Metaflex
Metaflex is the name of a material that brings
us one step closer to making fabrics that will create the effect of
invisibility of objects. The Metaflex is
a metamaterial, or what is the same, an artificial material that presents
unusual electromagnetic properties. In the past I have developed metamaterials
that bend and channel light to become invisible objects in long lengths. The
Metaflex consists of flexible membranes meta-material, created by the use of a
new technique which has freed the meta-atoms from the hard surface on which
they were built. Thus, the Metaflex can operate at wavelengths of about 620
nanometers in the visible light region. The union of these membranes could
produce a "smart fabric" that would be the first step to make a coat
or other garment to "wipe out" the person that size.
Holograms that can be touched
In Japan is working on a project in which a hologram,
plus be visible also may feel. Holograms typically appear on credit cards, DVDs
and CDs to prevent forgery. The larger holograms have also been used in the
entertainment industry (video game consoles like the famous Wii). So far the
technology has been tested with relatively simple objects, although researchers
have more practical plans, including virtual switches at hospitals.
The bionic eye
The invention is partially implanted in the eyeball and
is designed for patients suffering from degenerative vision loss or hereditary.
It restores sight perfectly, but it is expected that blind people are now able
to distinguish points of light that the brain can reconstruct images. How? The
bionic eye has a tiny camera placed on a lens. The device transmits a signal in
the retina, which stimulates neurons alive within this and which in turn send
the images to the brain.
Self-healing material
Swiss scientists have developed polymers that have an
inherent capacity to repair itself by exposure to ultraviolet light and that
could be extremely useful in areas such as packaging, construction, transport
and prolonging the life of materials used in numerous applications .
